Is porn in school okay or not? Time to rethink.

The use of porn videos as teaching material in Copenhagen schools has aroused controversies in the society while sex education is still mandatory in schools.

Sex education has been a compulsory subject since 1970 yet arguments about it have never stopped. Whether its teaching content should be fixed or even if it should be made mandatory is always a doubt.

Disputable sex education

Is sex education acceptable in Copenhagen?

In 1976, a group of parents filed a protest against the Danish government on the compulsory sex education issue to the European Court of Human Right. The Danish government won the case, yet it did not mean the controversies were over.

In spite of different uncompromising opinion, sex education is still listed on the agenda.

There are schools in Copenhagen mixing sex education with other subjects like biology, history and social studies. Schools can choose to use different approaches to teach the subject.

In Copenhagen, school board is mainly formed by parents, teachers and student representatives. Government has no say on the detailed teaching content even though in public schools.

Mr Lamhauge added that it is schools’ responsibility to take students’ maturity under concern while using porn videos as teaching materials. If they consider using particular material is suitable, government will not interfere.

“From our record, there are not many schools in Copenhagen use porn videos as teaching materials. We do not want to have any restrictions on schools. If schools think students can handle, we would not interfere.“ Mr Lamhauge exclaimed.

Even though in the capital, there is still deficiency on sex education. “It’s important to stimulate debate about gender and sexuality, which is needed in our age group,” said Mai Villadsen, the acting vice-chairwoman of the Union of Danish Upper-Secondary School Students.

“Students can really learn the difference between ‘real love’ and ‘sex relationship’ from porn videos. They provide better way for students’ understanding.” Ms Rosenbeck said.

She further suggested that sexually educated teenagers could teach their peers rather than only teachers teaching the subject because it could be more effective and easier to explain details. There had been students complaining teachers were not able to answer questions on sex education.
